UTIs: Symptoms and Treatment

It’s not uncommon to hear about urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially in women. About one in five women will have at least one UTI, while some have the infection chronically, and make frequent doctor’s office visits.

There are multiple variations of a UTI, depending on which part of the urinary tract is affected, including the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.

Symptoms of a UTI

There are multiple risk factors that will increase the likelihood of contracting a UTI. Aside from urinary tract abnormalities due to genetics, other outside factors apply. A suppressed immune system, a recent urinary procedure, or the use of a catheter all contribute to the risk of a UTI.

Some symptoms of a UTI can include:

  • Pain or pressure in the lower abdomen
  • A burning sensation during urination
  • Abnormal urine color
  • Strong smell to urine
  • Fever-like symptoms

Individuals might be genetically predisposed or have a urinary tract that is more susceptible to infection. Urinary tract infections start when bacteria enter the tract through the urethra and multiply in the bladder. Then, it can grow into a full infection in the urinary tract. However, infection may only be limited to the urethra. Fortunately, UTIs are very treatable at an urgent care center.

Treatments and Tests for UTIs

If you believe you may have a urinary tract infection, it is recommended that you make an appointment where staff can administer a test. At Instant Urgent Care, we provide testing and treatment.

Test includes a urine sample to check for bacteria, MRI scanning or a cystoscope. If found, this will be followed by a treatment including antibiotics.

It is crucial not to leave a UTI untreated, to risk infection spreading to other parts of the body, making it more severe.
