Allergy testing FAQs

What allergy tests are available at Instant Urgent Care?

We offer skin prick testing (for environmental allergens including pollen, dust mites, pet dander and mold) and specific IgE blood panels (for food and environmental allergies). Both are available as walk-ins at all 3 Silicon Valley locations. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate test based on your symptoms and medical history.

Do I need an appointment for allergy testing?

No appointment is needed. Walk in to any of our San Jose, Santa Clara or Sunnyvale locations during clinic hours and our board-certified providers will evaluate your symptoms and recommend the right test. With ample availability, you won’t have to wait weeks for a slot.

How long does allergy testing take?

Skin prick tests typically take 20-40 minutes total (15-20 minute reaction wait after the skin pricks). Blood panel draws take about 10-15 minutes, with results available within 3-7 business days. Your provider will review your results and discuss treatment options during the same visit for skin tests, or at a follow-up for blood panels.

Does insurance cover allergy testing?

Most major insurance plans cover allergy testing when medically necessary. We are in-network with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, HealthNet, Medicare, United Healthcare and many more. Affordable self-pay rates are also available. Call (408) 687-4806 to verify your specific coverage before your visit.

What is the difference between a skin prick test and a blood test?

A skin prick test applies small amounts of allergens to your skin and looks for a reaction (a small raised bump) after about 15-20 minutes. It is faster and gives results same visit. A blood test (specific IgE panel) measures your blood’s immune response to specific allergens – it takes a few days for results but is useful when skin testing cannot be performed (for example if you are on certain medications or have severe eczema).

Can children get allergy testing at Instant Urgent Care?

Yes. We see patients of all ages including children. Pediatric allergy symptoms like chronic runny nose, skin rashes and food reactions are very common and very treatable once the trigger is identified. Bring your child in to any of our walk-in locations and our providers will evaluate them and recommend the right approach for their age.
